Premier Dalton McGuinty's $17.5-billion transit plan will speed Hamilton commuters to Toronto, add local trains and create rapid transit corridors across the city.

The plan -- dubbed MoveOntario -- will spend $300 million on Hamilton. Construction is to begin in 2008 and be 95 per cent completed by 2020.

The keys for Hamilton are the electrification of GO's Lakeshore line and the local rapid-transit lines.

The east-west rapid transit corridor is to run along King and Main streets from Eastgate Mall to McMaster University.

Upper James and James streets will have a corridor running from Rymal Road to King Street.

The corridors could be dedicated bus lanes or a light rail system.

"I think it's fabulous," said Mayor Fred Eisenberger.

"It makes perfect sense, and I expect that those investments will make a huge difference in how our city operates." Source...
