Environment Minister John Baird said the government will announce new rules in ``days and weeks'' to fight pollution and combat greenhouse-gas emissions.

Canada ``needs tough new enforceable regulations to reduce not just greenhouse-gas emissions but also to reduce air pollutants in our environment,'' Baird, 37, told reporters today in Ottawa, after announcing plans to spend C$230 million on clean-air technologies. ``Those are actions which we will be beefing up in the days and weeks ahead.''

Harper said this month his Conservative Party needs to do more to fight pollution, after public opinion polls showed it was a top issue for voters, and the rival Liberal Party named a former environment minister as its leader. Former Environment Minister Rona Ambrose scrapped the previous government's plan to adhere to greenhouse-gas emissions caps in the Kyoto treaty, saying the pact's targets were impossible to meet.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper named Baird to replace Ambrose on Jan. 4.

Baird said today there's ``conclusive and overwhelming'' evidence that greenhouse gases are warming the planet. Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn also told reporters today the country needs to do better in ``cleaning up'' the oil-sands developments in the western province of Alberta. Source...
