The Canadian Alliance accused the Liberals of irritating an already raw relationship between Canada after reports said a senior Canadian official called U.S. President George W. Bush a "moron" during NATO meetings.
During meetings on Wednesday in Prague, the National Post newspaper reported that a senior official criticized Mr. Bush for using the meetings to try to drum up support for military action on Iraq rather than discuss new NATO initiatives.
"What a moron," the official reportedly said.
However, during a press conference in Prague on Thursday, Prime Minister Jean Chretien refused to comment directly on the matter.
"He is a friend of mine and not a moron. And I had a good time today," Mr. Chretien said.
